FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION DAY SCHEDULED
Spring cleaning? Remember to set aside any household hazardous waste that you may have for the upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. The Collection Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 10, 2023 at the Falls Village Highway Garage on Railroad Street from 9AM to 12PM. All participants must obtain a ticket from their town or city hall to participate.
Participants should: 1) be ready to show your ticket upon entry, 2) stay in your vehicle at all times, and 3) place all waste material to be removed in the rear compartment of your vehicle, not in passenger areas. Workers will remove the waste from the back of your vehicle and be in full safety gear.
It is important to keep in mind that many of the products routinely used for housework, gardening, home improvement, or car maintenance contain hazardous materials that may endanger our health as well as pollute the environment. Household products are considered hazardous if they are toxic, flammable, reactive, or corrosive. Examples of such products include pesticides, herbicides, oil-based paints, degreasers, household cleaners, paint thinners, and gasoline.
Improper disposal of these hazardous household products, such as pouring them down the drain or putting them in the trash, is dangerous and may contribute to drinking water contamination and air pollution.
Participating towns and the phone numbers for registration details are: Canaan/Falls Village (824-0707), Colebrook (379-3359), Cornwall (672-4959), Goshen (491-2308), Harwinton (485-2784), Kent (927-4627), Litchfield (567-7550), Norfolk (542-5829), North Canaan (824-7313), Salisbury (435-5170), Sharon (364-5789), and Torrington (489-2232).
Residents from participating towns must register and obtain a ticket from their Town Hall in order to participate in the Collection Day.  Registration is taking place now through June 2nd.
There is no charge to participants. The event is being sponsored by the Recycling Advisory Committee of the Northwest Hills Council of Governments and the participating towns listed above. More details on the Collection Day can be obtained in a brochure available at Town Halls.
