Civil Preparedness Coordinator

The AAState of Connecticut requires each municipality to appoint a Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC). The Chair of this Committee is the Emergency Management Director for the Town and at the present time, members include the Chief and EMS Captain of the Sharon Fire Department, the Town’s Building Official/Fire Marshal, a representative of Sharon Hospital’s Facilities Management group, a firefighter with extensive Red Cross Training, and the First Selectman.

The main charge for this Committee is to keep the Town’s Emergency Operations Plan up to date. The framework of this Plan comes to each of the Towns in the State from the Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS) and it is then customized to fit the individual Town’s needs. It is a dynamic document with changes made several times each year.

The Town’s Emergency Operation Center and Shelter is located at the Main Fire Station on West Main Street. In the event of a natural or man made disaster, this center would be staffed with those charged with the continuity of government. This building has an emergency generator, a commercial kitchen, handicapped bath facilities, and an array of radios that would allow communications with the Town’s highway crew, our neighboring towns, DEMHS Region 5 Headquarters in Waterbury, and the Dutchess County Emergency Operations Center in Poughkeepsie.

The Emergency Management Director for Sharon is Tom Bartram - please leave a message for him at Town Hall - 860-364-5789,  if you have any questions or comments concerning the Town’s Emergency Plan and he will call you back.
