Eligibility Requirements to Vote
You must be:
A U.S. citizen.
A resident of Sharon.
18 years old (you can register when you turn 17.
If previously convicted of a felony, have completed sentence and have a letter from the State. The last day to register is normally two weeks before an election. Please note that notifying DMV of a change of address does not automatically change your voter registration.
To vote at a Town meeting or in a referendum one must be a registered voter or be on the last completed Grand List in the Town of Sharon with a minimum assessed value of $1000.
How to Register
- In person - at Sharon Town Hall, Mon-Thurs. 8:30am-12 noon-1:00-4:00pm and Friday 8:30-Noon in the Town Clerk's office or Registrars office on Mondays from 10 to Noon.
- In person - at any other City Hall or Town Hall in the state.
- By a mail-in card furnished when renewing drivers license with DMV.
- By Mail- cards area available at all libraries and in the Town Clerk's office.

Absentee Voting
WHO MAY VOTE BY ABSENTEE BALLOT?
An elector may vote by absentee ballot because of:
- Absence from the town dining all hours of voting, illness or physical disability:
- Active service in the United States Armed Forces:
- Religious tenets which forbid secular activity on election.
- Primary or referendum day:
- Or service as an election official at a polling place other than the official's place of voting.
(Statute 9-134; Statute 9-135)
APPLICATION FOR ABSENTEE BALLOTS.
Application forms for absentee ballots may be obtained from any town clerk: and completed applications must be submitted to the town clerk of the applicant's town of residence on forms provided by the secretary of the state or (for those eligible) by federal departments or agencies. Applications may be obtained by the applicant either in person or through the mail. Ballots may be given or mailed directly to the applicant: they may not be given to another person for delivery to the applicant.
EXCEPTION: An elector who applies for an absentee ballot because of illness or physical disability occurring within six days immediately preceding the close of the polls at an election, primary or referendum may designate a qualified signee to deliver the ballot to him and return such ballot to the town clerk, by stating on his application, in a space provided for that purpose.

The name and address of the person designated - which, under section 9-140b must be a licensed physician, registered or practical nurse or any other person who is caring for the elector because of the elector's illness or physical disability, a member of the elector's family or, if no person consents or is available, then a police officer, registrar of voters or deputy registrar of voters in the municipality in which such elector resides (Statues 9-140 and 9-150). ELECTIONS
The elections are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November and the polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 pm. Municipal Elections are held every odd year. The next Gubernatorial Election will be held in 2010 and the next Presidential Election in 2008.
HIGH SCHOOL BUDGET REFERENDUM
The first Tuesday of May there is a referendum to approve the Region One School District Budget for the following school year in the towns of Canaan, Cornwall, Falls Village, Kent; Salisbury and Sharon The polls are open from noon to 8 pm. Please contact the Town Clerk regarding absentee ballots.
